VCAL AT NARRE WARREN SOUTHLater Years at Narre Warren South P-12 College
The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is one of two recognised senior school qualifications approved by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. Narre Warren South P-12 College is one of the largest providers of this qualification in the state.
The VCAL aims to provide a pathway into further study, apprenticeships, traineeships or employment for those students who do not seek immediate entry to university upon completing their secondary education. VCAL staff work closely with students to ensure that their pathway needs are being met. Students undertaking a VCAL course of study at Narre Warren South undertake studies at the College three days per week in Literacy, Numeracy, Personal Development and one VCE subject of their choice. On the other two days students complete one day of Structured Workplace Learning and one day undertaking a Vocational Education and Training (VET) subject. This qualification is usually undertaken off site at a TAFE institution or another school.
An important component of many students’ VCAL program is an Australian School Based Apprenticeship (ASBA). This program provides the opportunity for students to undertake a Certificate II or III level program whilst also completing on the job training and being paid for it. This is a cost effective alternative to the VET subject.

Students enrolling in VCAL are put through a rigorous selection process and expectations of student performance are very high. In 2008, Narre Warren South had more than 170 VCAL students and attained a 100% successful completion rate . We also received state awards for the VCAL Intermediate Level Outstanding Student (Daniel Windsor) and VCAL Achievement Award for Program Development (Staff – Kelly Lackmann) in 2006. In 2007 Narre Warren South student Scott McGuinness was awarded the Senior Personal Development Skills Achievement Award, and staff were awarded the VCAL Teacher Team of the Year Award.

VCAL students raised over $6,000 for causes including the Friends of Ermera (assisting the rebuilding of East Timor), Tyler Fishlock and Daniel Eisho, through a range of events including the “Brodie-Lee Douglas Memorial Catwalk”, VCAL Trivia Extravaganza, “AND1-Tyler Fishlock Basketball Tournament” and the Footy Homestead Day in 2007 as part of their Personal Development Skills Projects. Our students’ develop an understanding of the role they can play in making somebody else’s life better. They develop a local and global awareness and acquire the skills for life-long learning.
