Specialist Program

Kitchen Garden

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program at Narre Warren South P-12 started in March 2012. The aim of the program is to deliver regular kitchen and garden classes, enabling skills-based learning that extends across the entire school curriculum. Grade 1 and 2 students work alongside our Garden Specialist and students in Grade 3 and 4 learn the techniques of cooking. Students in Years 1, and 2 have the opportunity to work with The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program throughout the year which is led by a qualified gardener. Students in Years 3 and 4 learn about sustainability and the techniques of cooking and cook the produce from the garden led by a qualified cooking teacher.

As participants in the Kitchen Garden Program students spend structured time in a productive vegetable garden and home-style kitchen as part of their everyday school experience. There they learn skills that will last them a lifetime and discover just how much fun it is to grow and cook their own seasonal fruits and vegetables. The experiences are also linked to the integrated, literacy and numeracy learning of the students. EAL (English as an additional language) students have the opportunity to engage in real-life experiences in the garden as well.

Students are encouraged to respond and evaluate the artworks that are produced by themselves and their peers. We examine a wide variety of artworks and the way they are made and value each other’s work. Students are taught the elements of Visual Arts and use this to structure, plan and influence their work to the best of their ability. Artwork is displayed during the year inside and outside the school.

STEM (Science and Digital Technologies)

The Science Program at Narre Warren South P-12 College is for students in Year 3 – 6. Utilising our science labs within the school, primary students have access to a working science lab and materials and have access to our science technicians. This gives our students a distinct advantage over other primary schools. Students conduct experiments, test out theories and delve into science topics such as electricity, adaptation and survival and states of matter.

The Digital Technologies Program at Narre Warren South P-12 College is for students in Years 3-6. The school has invested heavily into providing IT platforms, such as iPads for students to investigate and use coding to program robots, understand digital systems and binary codes. Online safety is of high importance to us at NWSC and students are taken through ways to protect themselves online and how to use online platforms respectfully and safely. Our specialised Social Media Wellbeing Officer also provides regular support to students to ensure they understand the importance of online safety and the impact of their digital footprint. As our changing world is becoming more reliant on digital technologies it is most important that our students have the required IT skills and our STEM Program certainly gives them a great start.
